The climate of the Port of Progreso is subtropical, gnerally hot and humid, with a rainy season from May through September. The port is located barely 30 km. from the City of Mérida, just fifteen minutes away via a safe and modern highway.
The City and Port of Progreso in the State of Yucatán was founded by Juan Miguel Castro in 1872 with the official name of Progreso de Castro.
The Customs pier was inaugurated in the first days of June, 1947, with a 1.8 kilometer pier and two docks, each 200 meters long and a depth of 15 feet. Due to the large amount of traffic at the pier every day, a subsidy was received from the Federal Government to extend the pier to a length of over 6 kilometers, allowing ships with a draft of up to 23 feet to dock, basically ships capable of carrying up to 18,000 tons of cargo.
Progreso is the first and the most important deepwater port on the coast of Yucatan. During the first half of the XX Century, it was one of the principal communications routes, connecting the peninsula with the remainder of the country and with the United States. It also played a key role in the exportation of sisal, or henequen, during the era known as the Era of “Green Gold”.
Over the years the Municipality of Progreso has consolidated as a port open to tourism as well as national business. It has all the natural elements necessary for different recreational and cultural activities, and the public services offered by the port as well as its different districts are first class.
Progreso is a safe, peaceful area, with friendly people who treat the national or foreign tourist as a guest. In fact this is very possibly the reason for its popularity during the summer season. |
