THE HACIENDAS |
| |
The history of Yucatan is represented by her haciendas, where customs, economic and social activities have been carried out for centuries. Each hacienda has an architectural style typical of the era, where man and nature come together to show the world all that they represented. During the Colonial Era, the Haciendas of Yucatan were large ranches or plantations assigned to Spanish Conquistadors under the “encomienda” system. The Golden Age of the haciendas was during the XVIII Century, but by the XIX Century they had entered into an economic crisis which led to their conversion to henequen plantations. By the XX Century the haciendas had lost their economic strength and been abandoned. It was not until the end of that century that some Yucatecan businessmen and wealthy families began to buy them, restoring and modernizing them to preserve them as part of their heritage. Today the State also has haciendas that have been remodeled and adapted for use as hotels, restaurants, museums and private homes. We invite you to take a brief tour, for a feel of the era, and a desire to visit even more.

TEMOZON SUR |
| |
The Hacienda Temozon is a noble residence from the XVII Century, which has recently been restored. Known since 1665 as the home of Diego de Mendoza, a descendent of Conquistador Francisco de Montejo, today it is a five star hotel, with 26 rooms and suites that offer the lifestyle of a distant past. Entering under the Arch the first sight is of the Main House, painted red and contrasting the broad green of its lawns and fields. The reception area and rooms are exquisitely furnished, offering its visitors the luxury enjoyed by the Lords of Henequen at the beginning of the XIX Century. Much of the original decoration of the hacienda has been preserved, from its floor imported from Italy to the red and yellow mineral-based paints used on its stucco walls.

SANTA ROSA |
| |
Located 53 Kms southwest and 50 minutes from the international airport of Mérida, in the heart of Yucatán is the Hacienda Santa Rosa. This hacienda is very near the Maya village of Chunchicmil, from where it controlled the salt trade. Originally the home of the Garcia Fajardo family, today Santa Rosa is a luxurious inn that offers incomparable comfort to its guests. Its 11 rooms, four superior rooms, five junior suites, a main suite and Maya Villa are all carefully furnished to offer a unique charm. The tall windows disseminate light throughout its spacious interiors without allowing the intense heat to pass through. The ceiling beams viewed from the bed appear unreachable; in this context the furnishings seem to be just an illusion; the design captivates with its austerity.
